Rootstocks

Sweet cherry on a low-vigor rootstock Gisela 5 and Gisela 6 is definitely among the most popular and most interesting fruit species to grow. This rootstock requires support – poles and wire, as well as water, meaning drip irrigation system. Gisela 5 and Gisela 6 enable dense planting which results with intensive plantation that starts giving fruit quickly after planting. Cherry varieties which are in demand on the market are responsible for the high quality fruit with the main fruit size 26+mm.

Main characteristics of the rootstocks:

GIZELA 5 Gi 148/2: (P. cerasus X P. canescens), obtained in Germany. It prefers fertile soil with enough moisture. It tolerates slight congestion, but clay or dry soils do not suit it. This rootstock reduces the vigor of the plant, ensuring high productivity and high fruit quality. Suitable for dense planting (1600 - 3000 plants / ha).

GIZELA 6 Gi 148/1: (P. cerasus X P. canescens), obtained in Germany. It prefers fertile soil with enough moisture, but it is not as demanding rootstock as Gizela 5. It requires stronger pruning in order to achieve a balanced yield every year. This rootstock is moderately resistant to Phytophthora and somewhat more resistant to frost compared to Gisela 5. It reduces the vigor of the plant less than Gisela 5, but it also provides high productivity. Extremely suitable for medium-dense planting (1000 - 1800 plants / ha).
